Neon is looking for a law intern specializing in the financial services or fintech lending space. You will safeguard our reputation by guaranteeing that the company strictly follows law guidelines and gives legal advice to management about all relevant issues. A successful candidate will effectively ensure legal conformity and minimize probability of exposure.
As one of our first few hires, you will be an integral part of our team, working directly with the founders and C-suite execs on a day-to-day basis. You will be a part of key strategic decisions and directly responsible for architecting and implementing systems that shape our BNPL credit product and impact our customers directly.
You will be joining our core legal team working on: (1) identifying and providing guidance on regulatory and compliance matters related to our core buy now pay later lending product; and (2) providing business Legal advice to the Lending business, including on product development, implementation, and management; acquisition and marketing offers; negotiating and documenting agreements with partners and third-party vendors; and the ongoing support of the business in its client relationships.
Basic Stuff
- Currently enrolled (1L, 2L, or 3L) in a Juris Doctor degree program at an accredited law school
- Excellent knowledge and understanding of consumer law and procedures
- Demonstrated ability to create legal defensive or proactive strategies
- High degree of professional ethics and integrity
- Sound judgment and ability to analyze situations and information
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment is essential
- Self‐starter and problem solver, willing to solve complex problems and work independently
Responsibilities
In this role, you will,
- Analyze and advise about the applicability of federal and state registration/licensing, including analysis of applicable exemptions
- Identify and obtain associated state and federal regulatory approvals
- Prepare and submit company, branch, and, as applicable, individual license applications for credit-related licenses, as well as assisting with Secretary of State filings, trade name registrations, and other local and business registrations
- Advise on a broad spectrum of transactional, regulatory and general corporate matters involving consumer protection laws, Truth-in-Lending Act, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), the Bank Secrecy Act, state money transmission and licensed lending laws, payment network rules, and other state and federal statutes related to money movement
- Draft and solidify agreements, contracts and other legal documents to ensure the company’s full legal rights
- Provide clarification on legal language or specifications to everyone in the organization
